Brewing "Tea"

The books have arrived! They will be delivered to all schools participating in the Three Cups of Tea project at the end of this month via regional chairpersons for the NHSAA Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment (CIA) group. If you wish to receive them prior to January 31st, please contact Heather at hcummings@shaker.k12.nh.us to arrange pick-up. We are so excited to see the great things NH educators will share as the story unfolds...

I thoroughly enjoyed the book! What a terrific story about a remarkable man. I would love to be back in the social studies classroom and use this book with my students. It has an important message for our children...they should and can make a difference in this world. However, I might add that it has caused me to reflect and wonder if I have made any difference as yet.

The story of Greg Mortenson’s humanitarian adventure is breath-taking. The depth of his commitment and that of those he serves inspires us almost beyond what we thought possible. In the words of his co-author, David Relin, speaking of the remote villages of Northern Pakistan….”even isolation and poverty cannot prevent a determined community from achieving the goals that it sets for its children”

So it happens that now in our own community, with an eye to the current state of affairs in central Asia….. we put the question to NH schools and educators in the Lakes Region districts, who in turn, asked the question for us all around the state….would you teach this book? Right now? Would you take the time and trouble to create special lesson plans and projects for it? Would you add this work to your full schedule at this late date? Will you bring this story to your students?

The answer was a resounding yes.

And so we begin. Another determined community and again, a commitment.

A stunning book and an equally stunning gift! We in Hopkinton thank the Oristano Family Foundation and the Cricenti Foundation for extending this opportunity to our students.

We received the books!!! Thank you to the the Oristano Family Foundation and the Cricenti Foundation ! What a great story and what a great project to have NH educators use with their students!
We are planning (at least - maybe more) a book club based on the book in our school (Gorham High School).
In addition, the GHS Humanitarian Group is also planning a "Pennies for Peace" Campaign to help raise money for Greg Mortensen's CAI schools. We may have already tried to reach some of you other schools out there, but for those we have not and those interested, the students decided to put a twist on the Pennies for Peace project. Instead of only collecting money in our community and school, they have been trying to contact other schools in order to "challenge them". The idea is that an inter-school "competition" would motivate teenagers here and in other schools even more and that this way they could spread more awareness (about world peace, education and Greg Mortenson's story) and of course raise even more money for the cause. As of now, we only have a few other schools that are TENTATIVELY going to join the fun...
We are planning to start collecting pennies/money from February 13th until March 31st. Does anyone want to join the competition?! Please feel free to contact me (Lisa Morais - Gorham High School French teacher and Humanitarian Group Advisor) at lmorais@sau20.org. The more the merrier! WE CHALLENGE YOU!!!

What a great challenge for our NH schools, Lisa! The Central Asia Institute has some great material (CD/booklet) about the Pennies for Peace project. The website is www.penniesforpeace.org I can't wait to see how many of the schools take on the challenge!

Hi, Heather,

I am beginning Three Cups of Tea with my 12th grade CP class. I have started to create vocabulary lists for the students. The vocabulary lists are currently available as word documents on my website: http://jetyler1.googlepages.com on the English 12 CP page. I am teaching this novel in conjunction with the Kindness Project (also available on that page) as students examine the impact an individual has on society. I will be setting up a permanent page called Teacher Resources soon that will house these items for posterity.

I would really like to thank the Oristano Family Foundation and the Cricenti Foundation for their generosity in donating the books to Woodsville High School. We are very appreciative and I look forward to beginning this literary exploration with my students.

It is a great pleasure to read the comments and ideas from schools like Hopkinton, Gorham and and Woodsville, and we look forward to hearing from more of you. Those of us on the funding side are gratified by the enthusiasm, creativity and humanitarian spirit of the NH educators participating in this project. Please continue to use the blog to keep us updated and in the loop!

Several of us at Sanborn have read Three Cups of Tea, and we are thrilled to have more copies to share with students and staff to spread Mortenson's message. Many thanks to the Oristano Family Foundation and the Cricenti Foundation for making this possible. Thanks also to Heather Cummings for coordinating the distribution of these books. What a great idea to set up this forum for teachers to share different ways of using this important book.

We at Dover wish to say thank you for the generous donation of books so that we may participate in this exciting project. We ordered additional copies, and have, this week, begun the book with a group of highly motivated sophomores. We are only three days in--so far we have talked about the recent proliferation of creative nonfiction, and spent a day studying present day Pakistan together. Meanwhile, students are reading independently so tomorrow we will discuss the first six chapters. I will be happy to share whatever lesson plans, projects, and assessments come of this.
I am grateful to Ms. Tyler, whose vocabulary words I raided, and whose kindness project I am studying to see how I might challenge my students to do and write about some "random act of kindness..."
My thanks to the Oristanos and Cricenti Foundation for bringing this world to our students!

im a student from PRHS and i decided to read Three Cups of Tea for an indepedent study.. at first i was confused by the book and all the middle eastern terms mortenson used... but it's really nice that after each word he gives a little definition so the reader isnt lost along the way... i really enjoy this book though. it shows that the strength of one person can affect a whole country.. hes helping soooo many people further their lives and that must be a great feeling. greg has done a remarkable job and after reading this book, it's shown me that life isn't all about making yourself happy. it's about helping others and knowing that your making someone's life better, even if its small steps at a time.
